"Nicky and Jo were incredible to work with from beginning to end. They worked really closely with us to ensure that the garden design reflected our vision, taking time and care in producing our design, and then showing great skill and expertise in choosing and planting the plants. They communicated every step of the way to ensure that the end product was exactly what we had hoped for. Our finished garden is stunning, and we highly recommend their services."

— Sam & John, March 2021

The vision

Sam and John are fond of iconic natives like banksias, grevilleas, billy buttons and kangaroo paw, but wanted to create greater variety and interest by blending in hardy exotic flowering plants, fruit trees and a large deciduous tree.

The setting

There was one established Bottlebrush Callistemon in the corner of the garden, but otherwise the west-facing sloping block was largely knee high weeds.

The brief

The brief was to screen an adjacent property with thoughtful plantings, create a grassy play space for Sam and John’s two children, include lots of hardy flowering plants that can tolerate the western aspect, establish a large deciduous tree to protect a west facing bedroom from the summer sun, and blend exotic plants with native plants to create an interesting eclectic-style garden.

The design

Wild Urban Green used corten steel edging to frame the garden, creating a grassy pad perfect for a picnic or for the kids to play. We used the existing Bottlebrush to anchor new native plantings, and a Gingko and Apricot tree provided the backdrop for hardy perennials such as Shasta Daisy, Achillea, Jerusalem Sage and Lamb’s Ear.

The handover

Sam and John were not confident they had the know-how to care for the garden, so Wild Urban Green developed a comprehensive Care Plan, taking them through the specifics of their garden and what their plants need to thrive.

The progress

The garden is flourishing, and Sam and John are thrilled with the result. They receive lots of positive comments from friends and passersby about how fantastic it looks. They have subsequently engaged Wild Urban Green to design and plant their back garden too.
