Coburg Courtyard Jungle

Our clients were embarking on an urban courtyard transformation that included a carport conversion and spotted gum deck. Their “Wild Vision” was to create jungle-like garden beds, one encircling a huge pre-existing Willow Myrtle Agonis flexuosa, to infiltrate the space with lushness and provide a verdant outlook from both their house and their new pod.

Here’s what Wild Urban Green did next…

The process

Coburg’s problematic heavy clay soil needed to be improved so we built sleeper edges around the existing soil area under the tree, then created a raised bed with premium quality soil and mulch. A smaller tree on the fenceline was removed and a second sleeper-edged bed installed, positioned to provide not only a beautiful outlook but also eventually conceal a small garden shed.

Large rocks were strategically positioned to provide visual undulation and drainage to the beds. Plants - including two feature Cardboard Palms Zamia furfuracea - were placed with careful consideration for appropriate sun and shade in this small space.

We collaborated with our clients to select a mixture of lushness - Philodendrons, Elephant Ears, Cannas, Monsteras, Succulents, Ferns and Grasses - in black and a variety of greens for striking effect.

The outcome

The result is stunning - as the pictures below demonstrate - and the garden beds continue to thrive.

We provided a care plan, particularly around watering and what to expect across the change of seasons as some plants die back and other plants don’t.

Our clients are thrilled with their garden and the difference it makes to both their wellbeing and the visual enhancement of their daily outlook.

As the garden matures, our clients are inspired to keep tending and adding to their jungle oasis, in the heart of Coburg!
